A Letter from P'Fella
We all know what Black Friday is, right?!
It's the moment of the year when prices of products are increased on a Thursday and then suddenly reduced to a "reduced" price on a Friday. Whilst there are some great deals to be had, some of them are quite predatory.
This made me wonder, why aren't those predatory journals advertising any black Friday deals? I’m surprised predatory journals aren’t offering Black Friday sales on their fees to submit manuscripts. After all, they do have a history of offering "sales". Check it out below 👇
The unfortunate downward spiral of medical education. Perhaps it should all be decentralized by a DAO (which recently tried to by the US constitution).
It's fair to say at this point, there is a general consensus in the plastic surgery community on the current negative state of journals and publications. In a previous edition of thePlasticsPaper, P'Fella asked users if they thought journals can be predatory.. here are the results...

Article of the Week
This PRS Global Open Publication in 2018 by the WIRE Research Collaborative provides insight into the attitudes and decision-making behind the question - should we bury K-wires? It's worth reading the entire article here.
Here are some stats 👇
- ~800 surveyed (423 surgeons, 187 therapists, 187 patients)
- 53% of Plastic surgeons prefer to leave K-wires exposed
- 34% of Plastic surgeons have no preference
- 10% of Plastic surgeons bury their K-Wires.
The decision-making process 👇
- Infection concern → more likely to bury K-wire
- Want it easily removed → less likely to bury K-wire
- Aesthetics, service provision, economic impact don't influence decisions.
Patient's perspective 👇
- Exposed K-wires → more concerned about infection.
Conclusion👇
- Decisions to bury or expose K-wire are based on dogma rather than evidence.
- WIRE Research Collaborative published a protocol for further research.
